At CPHA, building meaningful partnerships to advance health and health equity is a major priority. When it comes to ensuring a resilient public health workforce for years to come, there is no more important partnership than the one we forge with public health students and early career professionals. That’s how the Public Health in the Rockies (PHiR) Conference Scholarship Program began.

The Colorado School of Public Health has a separate scholarship for their students. Please email Katie Brumfield at [email protected] for more information and to apply.

Scholarship Details

All scholarship recipients will receive complimentary registration to the PHiR conference and can choose to attend the full event or just one day. We will also reimburse up to $100 of travel expenses through receipts turned in after the conference. This reimbursement can be applied toward lodging or travel costs (mileage or rental car fees). You will be required to handle your own travel logistics including lodging reservations. Applicants will receive notification of their status by August 11th.

Eligibility Criteria

The scholarship program enables public health students and early career professionals to attend the annual PHiR conference, the region’s largest gathering of public health professionals. The Public Health in the Rockies 2023 Scholarship Application is available to current students (enrolled in high school or a college or university other than the Colorado School of Public Health), and eligible early career professionals (those who are within 3 years of graduating from their highest anticipated degree) or have been accepted as a speaker at the conference.

CPHA has defined health equity to be the active assurance that everyone is afforded the opportunities essential to attaining their highest level of health. In alignment with CPHA’s commitment to health equity and diversifying the public health workforce, we will consider demographic differences to support individuals’ ability to attend Public Health in the Rockies 2023. Specifically, we will prioritize our scholarship funds to support public health students and professionals who are underrepresented in health sciences fields and careers.  This includes, and is not limited to racial, ethnic, gender, faith group identity, language, national origin and ability.

All scholarship recipients must be a current member of CPHA or become a member of CPHA prior to the conference.

If you meet the eligibility criteria above, please consider applying for the scholarship. You will be asked to answer questions related to your current career status and scholarship needs.

Reminder: The Colorado School of Public Health has a separate scholarship for their students. Please email Katie Brumfield at [email protected] for more information and to apply.

Hear from our Past Scholarship Recipients

I wanted to take a moment to thank you all for supporting my attendance at Public Health in the Rockies this past week in Keystone! It was a wonderful experience. Attending the conference gave me an opportunity to meet some new people as well as finally meet people I’ve worked with for years in person for the first time. I was able to make connections, learn about how many of the different health departments operate, and listen in on some of the new practices and methodologies being developed. I sincerely appreciate this opportunity. Thank you so much! Kelly DeBie, 2022 Recipient

Thank you so much for the scholarship to attend Public Health in the Rockies. During PHiR, I was able to present my harm reduction research I conducted with Boulder County, network with passionate public health professionals and students, and take in the beauty of the natural landscape at the venue. PHiR offered me as much tranquility as it did information on public health in Colorado. I was able to connect with a research group that had conducted reports in my field of interest, as well as mentor a CU student on data collection and survey development. As someone who completed their undergraduate education in Montana and has family across the Rockies, PHiR has inspired me to ponder a return to the region and use my epidemiology skills to improve the health of populations in the Rocky Mountain Region. I hope to relive and build on this experience next year. Ethan A. Smith, MPH, Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, PhD Student | Department of Social, Behavioral, and Population Sciences, 2022 Recipient
